First an industrial scientist and then a historian, Alan Mackley's research has focused on landed estates, families, and their houses. He published, with Richard Wilson, Creating Paradise. The Building of the English Country House, 1660-1870. For the society he has edited the letters of John Buxton and co-edited John Patteson's Grand Tour correspondence. He is now working on a volume for the Suffolk Records Society concerning a battle between church restorers and preservationists, led by William Morris, in nineteenth-century Blythburgh. He has contributed to a number of TV and radio programmes and is active in community radio.
