John Barney retired in 1990 from partnership in a major international accountancy practice to become a history student at UEA. After completing his first degree in 1993 he continued as a post graduate student being awarded a PhD in 1998 for his thesis on the eighteenth century merchants and shipping of King's Lynn. Since then he has written and published books and articles on Norfolk historical subjects of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He became Treasurer of the Society in 2002 having previously acted as Independent Examiner and is on the Councils also of the Norfolk & Norwich Archaeological Society and of the Norfolk Archaeological and Historical Research Group.
