The Great Tour of John Patteson, 1778-1779
Patteson was a leading worsted manufacturer in Norwich who undertook a twenty months tour of Germany and Italy, half for business, half for pleasure. The eighty-one letters were written chiefly by Patteson and his anxious mother in Norwich. They are an important addition to the literature of the Grand Tour, especially since Patteson undertook a six weeks tour of Sicily and Malta with (Sir) John Soane and others. Richard Wilson wrote a thirty-nine page introduction.
