2022 Autumn Lecture: Editing Historical Documents

15 November 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm GMT

This is a free online event (via Zoom) and is open to Members and Non-Members.

Editing Historical Documents

This will be a double-header, comprising two short talks.

Editing the letters of Richard Cobden (1804-65)’, by Prof. Tony Howe

This talk will explain why an edition of Cobden’s letters was an important and attractive project; the process of collecting some 7500 letters from over 145 libraries and archives worldwide; the editorial procedures of transcription and annotation; selection and publication of The Letters of Richard Cobden in four volumes by Oxford University Press (2007-15) and in Oxford Scholarship online, and the current AHRC-follow-on funding project to make available some 6000 letters not included in the published volumes.

‘Cruel Necessity: Editing the Words of Oliver Cromwell’, by Dr Joel Halcomb

The letters and speeches of Oliver Cromwell have not lacked willing editors. Most famously, in 1845 Thomas Carlyle produced an unlikely Victorian publishing sensation with his edition, mixing his own impassioned narrative alongside often haphazard transcriptions. The next major attempt, Wilbur Abbott’s monumental 4-volume effort, was plagued by his inability to travel to European archives as WWII loomed and his increasing hatred for Cromwell himself. With this talk I will explain how the new edition, commissioned by Oxford University Press, attempts to tackle one of the most plagued editorial projects in British history.   To join the online lecture please register by midnight on 14 November, using the Booking form link below. If you have not received a confirmation email by midday on 15 November, which contains details of how to access the lecture via Zoom, please contact us.   Please note: The lecture will be recorded.
