Autumn Lecture: Maritime Trade and Sexual Scandal

8 October @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm BST

Free

King’s Lynn and the Low Countries in the Early-Seventeenth Century: Maritime Trade and Sexual Scandal by Dr Alan Metters

King’s Lynn remained throughout the early-modern period a significant English port and the Low Countries were a major market for its businessmen, particularly with the growth of the Dutch carrying trade and the emergence of the great commercial emporium of Amsterdam. These developments can be fully illustrated from the Lynn port books, which are the basis for most of the analysis contained in this paper. However, another less happy feature of the town’s life was also exposed when a Dutch sea captain complained officially about the perverse sexual behaviour of a notable member of the town’s political elite.

Short Biography of Dr Alan Metters.

Alan Metters was a history scholar at St Edmund Hall, Oxford and did his doctoral research in the University of East Anglia.  He worked for thirty-five years in schools and further education, becoming Head of Humanities, Languages, and Social Sciences at City College, Norwich, and an Ofsted Inspector.  He edited ‘The King’s Lynn Port Books 1610-1614‘ which was published by the society in 2009 and has been the Society’s Secretary since 2003.
