Burroughes was a gentleman farmer who lived at Browick Hall, Wymondham. His detailed journal of weekly entries provides a rare account of farming practices on a large heavy-land farm in the inflationary 1790s.

Description
Randall Burroughes’ farming journal covers the period from November 1794 to December 1799. Much of the text takes the for of weekly summaries of farming activities, but during busy periods of the year – especially around harvest time – more detailed treatment, in the form of daily entries are provided. Most farming topics are touched on: there are detailed descriptions of arable and livestock husbandry, the weather, labour relations, employment patterns and wage levels. But the abiding impression left after reading this journal is Burroughes’ total dedication to his farming enterprise.
Burroughes began farming at Browick Hall in Wymondham in south Norfolk in 1793. He continued to farm in the parish throughout the period covered in the journal, although in 1796 he moved from Browick to Burfield Hall in Suton (a hamlet of Wymondham), and in 1798 took on additional land at Stannards Farm and began to let most of the land in Browick.
