The papers of Nathaniel Bacon of Stiffkey (c.1546–1622) provide a lively picture of life in north Norfolk in the late-sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries and have long been recognised as a major source not only for the pre-occupations of a leading member of the Norfolk gentry but also for the interplay between local and national affairs.
This final volume comprises a range of documents that span the whole of the period 1555–1623 and includes: documents that were undated, and in some case undatable; documents discovered after the initial volumes of the overall edition had been published or had somehow been missed in the initial compilation; and documents relating to the bitter family dispute that erupted after Bacon’s death over the implementation of his will and his management of his stepsons’ inheritance from their own father. There is also, as an appendix, a transcription of the will of Bacon’s eldest daughter, Lady Townshend, who died at roughly the same time as her father; both were buried at Stiffkey on the same day.
